Bones could only stand there, completely and utterly speechless. Then again, Mack never stopped screaming long enough for him to get a word in. She reiterated the fact that she had gone to Cabras a week after the incident with the Laestrygonians giants and the locals who served them.

What Bones didn’t know was that Mack had almost lost her job in the process. She was currently suspended without pay and was using her savings to redeem herself. Bones knew no one in town would talk, so it didn’t surprise him that Mack got nothing out of them.

Bones held up a single hand, quieting the still raging fireball. “First of all, don’t do that crap again.” He never once rubbed his chin. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. “Secondly, when it comes to Cabras...” he looked her hard in the eyes, “steel vault. So, don’t try.” He looked away for a moment and opened his jaw wide, impressed at the strength of her punch.

He looked back at Mack, seeing a grin on her face.

“So,” she said, “you were actually there?”

He sighed. Dammit, dude...

Picking up his duffle, he turned away from Mack and pounded down the rickety dock already done with this place. A few of the planks beneath him were so loose that they caused Bones to stumble, making his tough-guy gate feel awkward and embarrassing. In between steps, he heard Mack coming right up behind him.

Bones put on the brakes and stopped, satisfied when she ran right into him. Bones was even more pleased when she let out an oof, followed by a bang and a splash. Glancing behind him, Bones smiled, seeing her sitting on her ass, glaring up at him. Her butt had broken through a piece of wood and hit water. Shaking his head, he smiled, faced her, and held out his hand. Bones could act like a jerk sometimes, but that didn’t mean he was one.

“You done?” he asked.

Nostrils flared, Mack’s anger eventually wilted, and her shoulders slumped. Next, she took Bones’ offered hand, and he effortlessly hauled the lanky woman up. Bones made sure she was steady on her feet before letting go and heading off again.

“Hang on a second,” he quickly added, holding out a strong arm, blocking Mack from continuing any further. “Is that why you brought me here, so you could punch me?”

Lifting a single finger, Mack shoved it into Bones’ forearm which was draped across her chest like the arm of a guard gate. He let her go but didn’t follow her right away. Stopping, she faced him and crossed her arms.

“If I did,” she replied, “that would be one hell of an expensive punch.”

Mack’s right eyebrow raised slightly, getting a small smile out of Bones. While he liked the balls this chick had, he didn’t like being lied to or conned.

Crossing his own arms, Bones waited.

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, part of me wanted you standing right here in front of me so I could knock your teeth in.” She stepped up to him, stopping only a foot from him.
